Detailed instructions are given for the construction of a simple inexpensive dc powered helium-neon laser with 6328-Å output. The design is for a 60-cm confocal resonator with a few milliwatts of coherent power output and rich mode structure. Variations to the basic design are suggested. Basic demonstrations that can be performed with the laser are described.
