It has been suggested that François d'Aguillon (1566–1617) made a photometer, thus anticipating Pierre Bouguer (1698–1758). It is shown that D'Aguillon was not trying to measure light, but only to find the law according to which light diminishes with the distance from its source. He did not succeed in this attempt.
