Nuclear magnetic resonance experiments are described which illustrate how spins in liquid and solid samples interact with their environment. A conceptually simple way of measuring the spin-lattice relaxation time is given, and demonstrations of uncertainty broadening, correlation time narrowing and the adiabatic theorem are discussed. Very simple apparatus is required for these experiments and demonstrations.
