A factual account is given of the origin and current status of the international organization of science, with special emphasis on physics in the U. S. A. The relationships between, and the roles played by the following bodies are stated: International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), Commissions of various types, National Academies, and National Committees.
