The difficulty encountered by a beginning science student is discussed in terms of the ability to build abstract models. Aristotle was unable to do this in some instances, able to do it in others, depending on his background knowledge. A student must be trained to perform mental, abstract, “experiments” to get an understanding of the technique of problem solving in science.
