In introductory physics courses “standing waves” are generally explained as the result of an interference between two progressive waves traveling in opposite directions. A theoretical discussion of the fundamental differential equation for motions of this sort leads to an alternative approach in which these motions are considered as natural modes of vibrations (eigen-vibrations). An outline for a teaching method emphasizing this aspect is given.
