After a few remarks about the necessity of adapting our teaching method to the rationalized mks system of units, a short analysis of the objections to the use of Coulomb's law as a basic, introductory law is given. A new approach is suggested which introduces Gauss' law by means of Faraday's ice-pail experiment.
