Working directly from the impulse-momentum theorem in combination with the angular-momentum equation, Rutherford's formula is derived without making explicit use of the trajectories of the scattered particles. This derivation is noteworthy in that it specifically demonstrates the special nature of the inverse-square-law force in classical scattering theory.
